Track newcomers make an impression
Wolverton, Hicks win individual titles at WSC Championships
Juan Carlo / Star staff Randi Hicks of Ventura College competes in the hammer throw during the Western State Conference Track Championships on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Hicks won the javelin throw.
It was a day for the natural athlete.
Moorpark College sophomore Daniel Wolverton, a wide receiver during football season, weathered a childhood of coaches asking him to join their track teams.
"This is my last year at Moorpark," said Wolverton, "so I figured Why not? I might regret it if I don't.' "
Ventura sophomore Randi Hicks took time out from a busy schedule that includes boxing, mixed-martial arts and basketball to pick up a javelin last month.
The pair of newcomers were the first two locals to win individual titles Saturday afternoon at the Western State Conference track and field championships at Moorpark College's Griffin Stadium.
"This comes natural to some people," said Wolverton.
A week after winning the WSC shot put title, Hicks won the WSC javelin title with a throw of 134 feet, 8 inches.
The mark was more than 40 feet farther than the Rio Mesa High graduate's initial practice throws five weeks ago when she joined the team after playing in the state basketball quarterfinal in Stockton.
"(Community) college is one of the last places where you can compete in multiple sports and get supported," said Tom Lawrence, Ventura's throws coach.
Wolverton won the 100-meter dash in 10.75 seconds, a full second better than his first race, and finished fourth (22.59) in the 200 meters.
"And I still don't really know what I'm doing, between you and me" said Wolverton, jokingly. "Mechanically, that wasn't my best race."
Ventura's Donovan Estes (11.06) and Moorpark's Chris Tidwell (11.16) followed Wolverton in fourth and seventh place, respectively, in the 100.
Moorpark defended its men's team title for the eighth straight year, outpointing College of the Canyons 176-125.
"To be honest with you, I don't think we focused on the championship as much as the individual results," said Moorpark's first-year coach, Keith Kephart. "It just call kind of came together."
Ventura finished sixth with 52 points, while Oxnard was 10th with 30 points.
The other two local individual titles came in the field. Moorpark's Alex Hoffman-Ellis won the men's javelin and Ventura's Leilani Howard won the women's hammer throw.
West Los Angeles won its first women's title with 18912 points. Moorpark finished fourth with 7512 points. Ventura was sixth with 60 points. Oxnard was 13th with six.
Moorpark's quartet of Brittni Showers, Kelly Guyton, Brianna Murdoch and Ali Williams won the 4x100 relay in 49.33.
Showers also finished second (12.51) in the 100 and third (26.14) in the 200.
Moorpark's Rebecca Albarran finished fourth (5:18.05) in the 1,500 meters. Ventura's Megan Hooker finished fifth (1:00.63) in the 400 meters. Moorpark's Elizabeth Wigton finished sixth (5-1) in the high jump.
Oxnard sophomore Miguel Cisneros, who won his second WSC title in the 10,000 meters last week, pulled out of the men's 5,000 to rest for next week's Southern California championships.
His teammate, Francisco Ambriz, finished third in his place, while Daniel Berg of Ventura, Juan Romero of Oxnard, Jason Sigelakis of Moorpark and Brandon Johnson of Ventura finished fifth through eighth.
The local trio of Oxnard's Ambriz (10:06.72), Ventura's Brandon Johnson (10:26.29) and Moorpark's Sterling Granger (10:28.12) finished second, third and fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Moorpark's Kyle Elsea finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Moorpark's Colin Dunbar and Jimmie Pacifico finished second and fourth in the hammer throw.
Ventura's Ricky Satterwhite finished third (50.19) in the 400 meters. Ventura's Angel Melendez finished sixth (2:01.15) in the 800 meters.
