College students from Ventura can share $10,000 in academic scholarships offered by the Ventura Police Officers Association, officials announced recently.
Applications will be accepted through April 30.
The fifth annual Dee Dowell Memorial Scholarships will be presented in May to honor Ventura police Sgt. Darlon Dee Dowell, who was shot and killed in 1978. Dowell was the first officer in the departments history to die in the line of duty.
The association intends to divide the $10,000 among a number of recipients, officials said.
Two types of scholarships will be awarded. The first is available to Ventura residents or graduates from Ventura high schools who are not immediate relatives of a Ventura Police Officers Association member.
The second is available to civilian employees of the Ventura Police Department and children of current and former association members.
In selecting recipients, the association will consider academic achievement, school and community service and financial need.
Applicants must be enrolled in college, plan a course of study related to public service, and maintain a grade-point average of 2.0 or higher.
Additionally, a resume of school and community activities, including a copy of transcripts through the most recent semester, are required.
Applicants must submit an essay of 750 words or fewer addressing the following themes: their goals, present and future; why they are applying for the scholarship; and the scholarships importance to them.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Applications are available at the Police Departments front desk at 1425 Dowell Drive or at http://www.venturapd.org.
