New dean named for undergraduate school

Pepperdine University has named a new dean for its undergraduate school, Seaver College.

Rick Marrs, associate dean of the college, will succeed W. David Baird, who is retiring at the end of the spring semester after a decade as dean.

Marrs is "widely admired for his capacity to work well with others, to solve difficult problems, and to bring people together," Darryl Tippens, provost and chief academic officer at the private Malibu university, said in a statement.

In addition to serving as associate dean, Marrs was chairman of Pepperdine's religion division for seven years.

He earned a bachelor's degree in New Testament Greek and a master's in divinity from Abilene Christian University in Texas. He received a doctorate in Near Eastern studies from Johns Hopkins University.
