About 100 store employees and customers were evacuated Monday night from the Vons on Rose Avenue in Oxnard after a refrigeration unit caught fire, authorities said.
An electrical malfunction in a produce refrigerator sparked a fire about 6 p.m. in the store at 2101 N. Rose Ave., said Deborah Shane, spokeswoman for the Oxnard Fire Department.
An employee used a fire extinguisher on the blaze before firefighters arrived about four minutes later, Shane said.
The store was closed for about two hours while fire officials checked the burned electrical components to make sure the fire hadn't spread, Shane said.
No one was injured.
Health officials instructed store employees on how to properly clean the affected area before the store was reopened. Vons management estimated losses at $20,000, Shane said.

If this had happened at 8 Pm or later, they would have had one of their main exits blocked and locked. They do this nightly.
