Plan for new Target store moves ahead

Plans for building a Target store in Simi Valley have moved forward and dates have been tentatively set for construction.

On June 4, the mega-retailer's staff is scheduled to appear before the Simi Valley Planning Commission to discuss plans to build a Target store at the site of the old Kmart building at the corner of Los Angeles Avenue and Madera Road, said Brian Gabler, Simi Valley's assistant city manager.

If approved, Target plans to begin demolishing the existing building on Oct. 1. Grading for the land is scheduled to begin on Nov. 1 and construction on Dec. 1. Gabler said Target's timeline has the new store opening in September 2009.

Gabler did not know if the new store would be a Target Greatland superstore or a regular Target. He also did not know if Target planned to close the existing Target on Cochran Street.

Why do we need another Target? We all ready have one in Simi. They should build something that all the teenagers in Simi can enjoy. Simi Valley is seriously lacking in that department.

You mean, like a movie theatre? Simi has two of those...skating rink? We have one of those. Skateboard park? Yep, have one of those, too... YMCA? Yes. Mall? Check.

How is Simi lacking? The shopping area near Madera and LA Avenue is in dire need of renovation. The only downside I see is more traffic (which I strongly hope the builders will address accordingly).

Well... now that there are definite plans, maybe they could turn off all the lights in the meantime? Do the front of the (empty) store and the parking lot need to be illuminated all night, every night while no one is there? Seems like a huge waste of electricity, seeing as how there's nothing to steal and vandalism can't really hurt a building that's coming down anyway.

Whether or not Simi is lacking in places for teens to entertain themselves, its pretty hard to get excited about a Target at the western gateway to the City. Now Simi can boast a Walmart, a Costco, a Petsmart, a Office Depot, a Home Depot, a Best Buy, a Kohls, a Borders , a Bed, Bath & Beyond, and maybe 2 Targets. The only thing we're missing is a Michael's and its anywhere USA. Yawn.

I'm glad K-Mart is gone. The store had a full row of fluorescent lights every three inches from wall to wall. What a waste of energy! I don't get Target adding yet another store?? If I couldn't find it at the Cochran or Moorpark store, I always have crappy WalMart. What we really need (and they had the property and dropped the ball big time) is a Sears. I hate driving to Northridge just to get parts for my washer or bbq. You would think that Sears (the parent company of K-Mart) would have taken advantage of this. Oh well, maybe we'll get a Sears when the crappy Macy's Men's location (formerly Bloomingdales for about five minutes when the mall opened) finally closes. We need a SEARS!!!

NO Sears. Come on! Simi is full of department store types and corporate establishments. Wouldn't it be great if Simi had some interesting, private restaurants and unique boutiques to go to?!

look at the bright side, the new Greatland Target will give the tweakers more of a selection to shoplift
