MARTIAL ARTS

Karate championships on Sunday

The 21st annual Camarillo Karate Championships will be held Sunday at Camarillo High from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be 300 competitors, ranging from age 4 to 50 and over, squaring off in traditional Japanese and Okinawan styles of Karate Do. The individual events include forms, sparring, flag sparring (4-6-year-olds), Bo (long staff) and Jo (short staff) forms, adult three-man team sparring and the first event of the day will be a black-belt competition.

Camarillo Shotokan Karate and Sensei Victor Young are hosting the event.

Schools from Santa Maria, Lompoc, Northern California, Orange County, San Fernando Valley, East Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, UCLA, Playa del Rey, Fontana, Arcadia, Temple City, Pasadena, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Philippines, Australia and Camarillo will take part in the competition.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

SPARQ combine Saturday at Calabasas

The Ventura County Nike SPARQ football combine will take place Saturday at Calabasas High.

Free registration is between noon and 2 p.m. Incoming freshmen and high school players are eligible to participate.

Athletes will be tested on the 40-yard dash, shuttle drill, powerball toss and vertical jump, and will receive an official SPARQ rating. Upperclassmen that show Division I potential may receive an invitation to the Stanford Nike football camp this spring.

FIELD HOCKEY

Camarillo club earns championship

The Camarillo Field Hockey Club's girls' under-19 team captured the championship at the University of the Pacific's annual 7-on-7 tournament in Stockton. The Cougars defeated San Jose, Davis, Chico and Gilroy, while tying Saratoga, on their way to a 4-0-1 record and the championship. This is Camarillo's second championship in the six years they have attended the event.

Members of the team included Megan Cruise, Simi Valley; Taryn Cardiel and Jordann Schoonover, Moorpark; Samantha McPherson and Sarah Hawkins, Ventura; and Charlotte Hutton, Liz Niles and Toni Centeno, Camarillo.
