Random Acts of Comedy in Thousand Oaks
Every wednesday evening around 8 P.M. a small group of stand up comics take turns on stage in Thousand Oaks. Producer/comic Kamaka Brown does the hosting chores as he welcomes a smattering of audience to his comedy workshop.
"I call the show "Random Acts of Comedy" because it's always random who is going to show up," Brown said. "We've had writers for the Jay Leno Show, comics on network television shows, touring headliner comics passing through, and a core group of local comics who work in Hollywood and LA comedy clubs drop in to work out new material."
It's a different kind of show in that no one gets paid to perform and people wanting to "get their feet wet" in comedy can try out in a supportive environment.
The Other Place Sports Bar and Grill at 821 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. is usually a place for sporting events as the name suggests. "If the Lakers are playing we usually just hang out until the final buzzer and begin our show," Brown laughs.
There isn't a cover nor a drink minimum although Brown encourages his audience to support the club by making purchases. "They are kind enough to let us do our show here, so why not support the club?" he said.
The April 23rd show will feature New Zealand comic Stephanie Paul getting ready for her Pasadena Ice House show this weekend. Katsy Chappell who has appeared in TV shows like "In Living Color" and movies including "True Lies" will take the mike.
David E. Taylor performs literally hours before catching a flight to New York for club dates there. Moorpark's original cowboy comic Risky Betts will mosey on in for a set and Ventura County Star columnist Jason Love will do a set.
"Other than that it's random," Brown says, "I am always knocked over by who walks in the door to do some time onstage!"
