Ventura Raceway: Rutherford claims back-to-back wins
Ojai's Troy Rutherford found the fast racing line Saturday night at Ventura Raceway.
Rutherford pulled off his second straight Sprint Car feature win.
Brandon Thomson finished second. Rick Hendrix was third. Kevin Kierce was fourth and defending champion Greg Taylor was fifth.
Luis Espinoza started on the pole, but by the second lap Rutherford was coming off the high dirt on the track and was flying around the track.
The track was to Rutherford's liking.
"It was a great race and I like the race track like this," said Rutherford.
Clark Templeman III is the Sprint Car series leader with 1,220 points. Hendrix is second at 1,215.
John Richards captured the Senior Sprint Car main. It was his second win since last season.
Richards, 76, credits his success to Jim Porter for setting up the car.
Porter, a former Senior Sprint Car champion, makes things click.
"I hope he never gets back into a car," said Richards.
Ron Bach, a two-time Senior champion, finished second. Rob Kershaw was third in the 45-and-older division. Wiley Miller, a four-time champion, was fourth. Danny Miller was fifth.
Kershaw is the points leader with 620 after three races. Bach is second at 610.
Joel Chavez Sr. wasn't going to let his son, Joel Jr., win and promptly passed him for the 20-lap Sport Compact victory.
Randal Dougan was second and Chavez Jr. was third.
Rick Rodarte raced to victory in the 15-lap IMCA feature. Defending champion Jack Parker was second.
Charlie Butcher was victorious in the Junior Focus Midget main. David Perry was second and Jake Swanson was third.
Racing returns Saturday with the D'Angelos Sprint Shootout Series race.
