Sisters arrested in connection with drive-by shooting in El Rio
From staff reports
Ventura County Sheriff's deputies on Sunday afternoon arrested two sisters on suspicion of committing a drive-by shooting in El Rio, authorities said.
No one was injured in the shooting, which was reported in the 2500 block of Balboa Street in El Rio at 3:46 p.m. Sunday, according to a prepared statement from the Sheriff's Department.
Deputies investigating a report that the suspects in the shooting were two women last seen driving in the 900 block of Walnut Drive in El Rio arrested sisters Janelle Mata, 23, and Naomi Mata, 22, on Walnut Drive about 25 minutes after the incident.
Deputies found loaded weapons including a shotgun in the vehicle the sisters were driving, authorities said.
Naomi Mata was booked into the county's Pre-Trial Detention facility on suspicion of possessing a concealed, loaded firearm, and a short-barrelled shotgun and receiving stolen property.
Janelle was booked into the county's Pre-Trial Detention Facility on suspicion on the same crimes and shooting at an occupied building or vehicle.
Naomi and Janelle were being held in the county's main jail this morning in lieu of $25,000 and $60,000 bail, respectively.

At least it is more criminals off the street. Let's hope justice is served so no more lives are lost.

For years, the gangs have always had the girls doing their dirty work --- that's why so many of them are sitting in prison --- for doing the dirty work for their gang member boyfriends ... Some people never learn

YOU GO girls!
Straight to prison.
Losers.

the gangs don't necessarily have girls doing their dirty work. the girls have thier own dirty work to do. you can't blame men for influencing girls all the time. sometimes, sure. who's to say the men aren't working for the girls? sadly, they have their own agendas, own gangs and their own sawed off shot guns. and beware, girls are meaner.

Where were the girls from? They may have been from a gang outside of El Rio. This is kind of scary. Two shootings in El Rio on consecutive Sunday afternoons.

Shoot, next time I visit my relatives in El Rio, I'll be sure to go with extra precaution.

Pre-trial detention facility?? What the hell? A jail is a jail. Are they trying to soften things up for criminals now?

Here we go again. Our legislators and courts have let us down. Janelle has graced local courts some 9 times. Charges have ranged from drugs to weapons with much in between. Regardless of prison comforts, she should not have been on the streets because a propensity for violance and disregard for the safety of others had been well demonstrated and documented. How being a banger with a loaded firearm could be downsized to a misdemeanor I don't understand.
Naomi is actually a sweet girl. She has only been in court twice locally, once for being an unlicensed driver and the other for DUI, >.08 blood alcohol along with a false ID. She is certainly fortunate to have an older sister to set the example.

Their parents are probably just as proud as the parents whose offspring are narrow-minded, self-righteous, conclusion jumpers who don't know what they're talking about, but are already pointing fingers.

It is obvious to even a blind person from BilltheButcher's comment, that predjudice and stereotyping is alive and well and flourishing in Ventura County.

valdevious51, to answer your question, I am not a cop. I am retired military, a parent and a grandparent. I was born in Ventura. I do not like what I see happening to my county. I particularly don't like neighborhood deterioration, graffiti and gang activity.
I enjoyed camping and fishing in the back country with my dad and friends when we could park our car for days, knowing that it would be there when we returned. I enjoyed high school ... when there was no need for school resources officers ... and gangs weren't a threat to the public.
I do know how to research public records, and do so when I feel that a point needs to be made. I am disappointed that political correctness has placed comfort of prisoners over the safety and well being of the law abiding public.

Last I heard, 22 and 23 year old females were considered women, not girls. Maybe they used to be "nice girls", but now it appears they are dangerous women.

What public record states that a person is 'actually a sweet girl' or not? Sounds like you have more knowledge than can be gleamed from public records.

Shooting into buildings hoping to kill people in general is the worst kind of attempted murder. Killing without giving a thought are what gangsters do. Use of a weapon in an attempt to kill indiscriminately should be life in prison With possibility of parole. valdevious51 is right, just because these two women shot deadly weapons into an occupied building doesn't mean they shot deadly weapons into an occupied building. Let's not jump to conclusions anybody.

What else in the world where they doing then? Playing and pretending they were water hand-guns? Testing out the weapons see if they were real? Practing by aiming and shooting to see if they have what it takes to enlist in the military?
C'mon now!

I didn't know that the trial was over already and a guilty verdict was reached. Then again, the defendants' must have 'labeled' themselves when they were born with the last name of Mata --as opposed to Mathers or Madison.
As for offending me, unfortunately you didn't get the privilege. Post it again and I might read it this time. You know, if you made those eyeholes larger in that hood that you and "your homies" wear, YOU might get a better view of the REAL world around you.

sandypants83 ,Well since they are both adults I would hope the parents are terribly ashamed. Not only did they hurt the Victims, the neighborhood, but hurt thier families also.
Welcome to Chowchilla ladies !!!! You won't like it!
slkrchck , I agree. They were just stupid girls. Or women. They were adults.
Ventura22,FYI, Pretrial is jail. They just haven't gone to court and haven't been sentenced yet. You have pre-trial, Mininmum and Max.
valdevious51 ,If someone is in jail at the time you can get thier record. Also if you know thier birthdates you can get all Info. Unless there is another site I haven't found yet.
But I do know that the usually for a drive by is ten years!
imbetnonit , I agree ! THey chose thier path!
Relvd98 , Meth does destroy brain cells. Cells that do not grow back!!!!!!!! I agree.....
I do have Condolences for the parents. I am sure they are suffering also. You can't always control your kids lives. Unless they were brought up that way.

Lets not forget the action of what they did buy being more concerned about their past or age..regarless of their race as well. Who cares about what they did a year or two ago..Because on Sunday They shot into an occupied building with innocent people that have families. They should have NO BAIL!
VALDIVIOUS51- Im more then positive you wouldnt be as deffensive for those uncivilized little girls if a member of your family or good friend were in that building..so try and understand where everyone is coming from! I hope they max those "HOODRATS" out!!!!

face99 & mmshoot: Yes, I am racist -- a HUMAN racist.
4petesake: If you were accused of being in the car with those two young women, I'm more than positive that you would want people to have their facts straight before they joined the lynch mob and, be thankful for the right of innocent until proven guilty --which happens to be the only thing I am defending at this time.

why anyone would defend humans like this is beyond any rational thought. with their rap sheet, it is only a matter of time till one of them kills another. or at least gets caught killing another person.
black, white, brown, yellow, blue. color does not matter. neither does the area you grow up in. for the most part, it is all about how you were raised. these two ladies were obviously not raised right. they dont belong in society.
and for what it is worth. Time Arrow spends almost all of his free time volunteering in the communities around ventura county. he is working to better the neighborhoods for the future. before you rag on him, ask yourself what you have done to make your neighborhood safer.

mmshoot- The street definition of a "HOODRAT" is a girl (or in this case..sisters) that hang with the local hood and usually sleep with them, carry their drugs, weapons, and take the rap for their crimes too! And their usually pretty well know in the neighborhood.
Valdivious55- If I were caught in a car with them?..I think NOT! Im not just speaking on my own assumtions..Im going by the newspaper, and it states "Deputies found loaded weapons including a shotgun in the vehicle the sisters were driving"...what more evidence do you need???
Posted by Relvd98 on April 22, 2008 at 2:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Exactly. Loaded weapons in the car were found. What else should the police be looking for instead?

not sure if this was a knock on me or not. it could be the first time I was ever referred to as a "Bleeding heart" though.
if I had my way, we would spay and neuter all gang members when they are arrested for anything. treat them like wild dogs. if no one claims them from jail inside a week, put them down...

Please do not mention or criticize the last name Mata or family for your information their father is deceased and at no means would he be proud. He was a well educated bussniess man and as for mom she also is an educated professional person, so as for your comments they are unnecessary as far as the parents are concerned. Like you all said these are women not girls and I am not justifing what they did, but do not blame the parents of their decisions.

Okay let me clear it up a little for you. No need to jump the gun. There is no excuse for what these girls did. But I guess one of the girls shot at another girl because this girl had stabbed her weeks before. But violence is not the answer needless to say she freaked out and ask her sister to give her a ride when they got in the sisters car the cops showed up and arrested both of them... the end.. as far as their parents being proud of them well about ten years ago their loving and devouted father was killed in a car accident while coming back from vacaction from Arizona. He was a college graduate that was a great mentor to many young people how his daughters delt with his death and life after this tragic chapter in their lives....I guess you would have to walk in their shoes to see life through their eyes. This does not excuse their behavior but when you know facts it helps to show compassion...

This story has been out for a few days now and some of the comments that have been going back and forth have been pretty funny but please don't lose sight of the beginning of the comments. TImeArrow you nailed it on the head. I think it's VERY important to look at this woman's violent criminal history and question why she hasn't gone to prison and why is she still on the street. If the STAR began looking into the DA's office and DA's that plead out cases to avoid trials and get guilty conviction stats the community would be outraged. Is justice being served????????
