Editorial: It's about life, not television
Hide the remote this week
Today begins Turn Off TV Week, that period when people can take a break from whatever hold television exerts on their households.
The observance will run through Sunday, so you have plenty of chances to find out how rewarding life can be when you resist the siren call of television.
In fact, turn off the computer, too. It doesn't really count to turn off television and then turn on the computer to watch movies or streaming video or to play games.
OK, the TV's off. Now what?
Here are 10 suggestions to get you started.
10. Invite friends over to discuss how to help your community.
9. Take the children to the zoo.
8. Reacquaint yourself with a good book, fiction or nonfiction.
7. Spend an evening attending a classical music concert or stage play.
6. Take that special one in your life out for a romantic dinner.
5. Visit the Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks, or the San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura, or the new Seabee Museum at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme.
4. Call up that friend you haven't seen since high school and reconnect.
3. Write a letter — not type or e-mail one, but write it with a pen on real paper.
2. Watch a sunset and let your imagination flow.
1. Read a newspaper, preferably The Star, from front to back every day.
And, when Sunday rolls around, you might find you've come up with a whole new set of things to do that are fun, informative and don't require being a couch potato.

MSNBC is not a Nazi propogandist channel. That honor goes to Rupert Murdoch's own 'Founded On X-lax', because it is so full of...well, you know.

No. Your computer needs to be turned off for that same week. Well, considering we're both online typing threads, we blew that one. So, to Hell with the rest of the list.
