The driver in a single-vehicle crash was killed Sunday on southbound Highway 33 near Stanley Avenue in Ventura, officials said.

Three passengers were ejected from the car, a Toyota Corolla, which was overturned and on the right shoulder when authorities arrived about 6:45 p.m., according to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher.

The ejected passengers suffered moderate to major traumas, Ventura City Fire Department officials said in a statement. All three were taken to area hospitals. Officials at the scene said the driver was a woman in her early 20s, possibly from Camarillo. A CHP dispatcher couldn't confirm this.

The crash occurred in a relatively straight corridor of the highway south of Stanley Avenue where a concrete barricade lines the right side of the road. A southbound lane was closed for two hours as authorities investigated and cleared the roadway, officials said. Further details on the crash were not available.

What a shame. And at least some of the injuries, and maybe the death, could have been prevented by wearing seat belts. I know, it doesn't say they weren't wearing them, but it is extremely rare for someone wearing a seat belt to be ejected.

My heart goes out to the families, I was the third car behind this accident. A scary reminder how short life can be. My prayers are with you.

My prayers go out to Desiree's family. I know Chris and Jermey and I pray the all 3 of them pull out of this. This should be a good reminder for all people to be wearing their seatbelts.

Desi was a good friend of mine and i will miss her terribly. she will forever be in my heart and memories as the girl who was always smiling, laughing, and just being her crazy fun self. previous people who have commented and others who will come to comment dont be more concerned about everyone not wearing seatbelts and what drugs they were or were not on. be more concerned for her friends and especially her family who will never get to see her smiling again except in pictures and in their memories. also the guys in the car were the most cause of the accident. they were moving around trying to make the car rock therefore desi lost control of the car. may this be a lesson to others. live each day as if theres no tomorrow. the mooney family you are in my thoughts and prayers.

The obit isn't out yet, but viewing is scheduled for Thurs 5pm to 8pm, services are Fri at 11am at Griffin Bros Mortuary on Daily Dr in Camarillo next to Wood Ranch BBQ. See you there, mom and dad and sisters could use your support. Also if you can remember some of her favorite songs that'd be cool.

I'm not sure who you are. But thank you so much for pointing out that Desi was the driver yes, but not necessarily at fault for the accident. People always like to jump to conclusions and finger point, but they may not be correct.

i know Ryan cox and i hope he's okay and i loved Dessi Mooney we were childhood friends. i passed by on sun and wanted to stop by sometime this week just to say hi, and now i find myself trying to say goodbye. its too soon though its not fair she was so young . i miss her and seat belts are important but if the boys in the car hadn't been flung from the car they could have died also. goodbye Dessi I'll miss you.

So yes, it's rare that people who are wearing seatbelts are ejected from a car. But just as common that seatbelts save lives. Desi was the only one in that car to be wearing a seatbelt. Makes you think, doesn't it? A little ironic if you ask me. It's hard to think that she was the only one belted in, and she was the only one who wasn't ejected, thus the only one who was killed instantly. She was my sister, by the way, and thanks to all of you who are keeping her and my family in your thoughts and prayers.

For the record, not ONE person in that car was wearing a seatbelt. Placing blame on the driver or the passengers is not helpful.
Yes, the 3 boys may have been playing around in the back seat but Desi was driving at dangerously high speeds (90 MPH).
Not one of them deserves to be where they are at, either gone forever or in the hospital. No one in that car caused the accident. It was an ACCIDENT.
Shane, I love you and wish you could be here with us and with Ryan. I'll call you later today.
Your sister,
Renee

Sorry SRCHEEK but speeding+rocking the car IS the cause of this "accident"

Posted by Savage1 on April 27, 2008 at 12:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

you guys get on here and jump on the family of the victims when they are just trying to make the other victims family feel bad because it could of been thier fault. the people in the car could of been messing around but it was two things that caused that accident and those are stupidity and alcohol.Once again ryan I love you little brother and renee you never called lol well I love you all too and as soon as I can afford to get to vta I will be there.I was supposed to be there friday but I had to take care of some things to stay out of trouble. to everyone leaving nice comments we all appreciate it and it means the world to our family

For the record, my calling this an "accident" doesn't mean I'm trying to downplay the victims' participation in events. However, they could have had an accident had they all been wearing seat belts, sitting properly and. driving the speed limit.' I am simply trying to reiterate to people that the victims' family and friends are getting support, information and keeping in touch with another via this blog. They don't need anybody else's negative drivel. I know I certainly don't give one whit if anyone thinks that they "got what they deserved", etc. I frankly hope no one ever experiences this. My brother is 17 years old and the baby of my family. I can only hope he never finds out how negative some of you were when he wakes up. He is STILL in ICU a week later, Jeremy and Chris are still recovering, and Desi died. Get some empathy and some compassion. It may do you good.

Posted by beachgurl on April 29, 2008 at 8:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Empathy and compassion abound. Denying that goofing around in a speeding car cost 1 life and 3 major injuries does no good in preventing other kids from hopefully look at this "accident" and thinking twice before acting the same. Kids do stupid stuff every day but at some point need to say "that could have been me" and then hopefully mature a little and stop with the dangerous nonsense that could land them up in the morgue or the ICU. No one wants to see kids (or anyone) hurt or killed like this but someone needs to have the guts to say that the behavior was the cause and not just some random "accident" that was unpreventable.

Posted by Savage1 on May 1, 2008 at 12:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I know that someone on here said that someone else saw the boys messing around before the accident but that does not mean that they were when the accident occured I mean for all anyone knows they could of been avoiding something in the road and that could of easily be the reason they ended up off the road.It could of been so many different reasons there is no reason to say it was unavoidable unless you were in the car with my brother and his friend and you were not so maybe some things dont need to be said. When my brother wakes up and if he tells me yes we were all jumping around and rocking the car I will come on here and say sorry but the fact is you still dont know anything.................
