Book series ends with discussions
California Lutheran University professors will conclude the second year of a book review program with discussions about religious literacy and a spinster who isn't what she appears.
The order of the last two sessions of Books and Brew has been switched from the original schedule.
Christopher Christian, a psychology professor and director of CLU's Community Counseling Services, will review "The Piano Teacher" by Elfriede Jelinek from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday.
Although a spinster in the book appears to be a dutiful daughter, she possesses a perversely sexual nature.
Religion lecturer Paul Egertson will review "Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know — and Doesn't" by Stephen Prothero from 4 to 5 p.m. May 1.
Prothero explores the prevalence of religious illiteracy, outlining origins and offering solutions that address religious education while preserving the First Amendment.
The professors will answer questions and lead discussions during the sessions, which are open to the public. Coffee and refreshments will be served.
Books and Brew will be held in the Roth Nelson Room on Mountclef Boulevard on the CLU campus in Thousand Oaks.
CLU's English Department, College of Arts and Sciences and Academic Affairs are sponsoring the free program.
