Annual Spring Gourd Festival
Every spring for the last several years, the Channel Islands Gourd Society (CIGS) holds a spring festival to share the fruits of their labor of the previous year, such as the Progressive Gourd shown in the picture. which is a combination of artistic expression by many members of the club.
The festival is a colorful event, with booths of beautiful, creative displays of the many uses the gourd has provided for a long time. Gourds have been used by Indians, Africans, Australian tribes, as well as many other groups as water receptacles, as food bowls, and even as masks for ceremonies. This festival too, will be having a parade of masks that were created by some members of the club. The CIGS festival will provide an opportunity to see demonstrations of various techniques used on gourds, such as painting, woodburning, weaving, and many more. There will be decorated gourds for sale as Mother's Day is near, making this an ideal time to get a unique gift. Each hour there will be a raffle held, and a chance to win a one-of-a-kind gourd birdhouse.
A children's workshop will be available that gives children of all ages a chance to make something to take home with them. The experience may be one that draws them toward being artists themselves and enjoying the expression it allows.
The Annual Spring Gourd Festival is Saturday, May 10th, from 10a.m.-4p.m. Admission is free and is held at the lovely, Santa Rosa Valley Clubhouse, at 11701 E. Las Posas Road, in Santa Rosa Valley. For more information, call Elsie Cogswell at 805-491-5846.
