Ojai city officials are looking for artists to submit proposals for the Changing Sculpture Pedestal at the Ojai Arcade Plaza for display from June to May 2009.
The annual program offers exposure for artists and an greatopportunity for the public to view a variety of sculpture. City officials invite all regional and local artists to submit proposals by May 19.
The base of the pedestal will accommodate a piece weighing no more than 700 pounds, with a maximum height of 10 to 12 feet and a maximum width of 5 feet.
Because this is a public space, the sculpture should pose no safety hazards such as jagged edges or delicate material that might break easily. The artwork should securely affix to the hardware provided at the base support, though the pedestal mounting can be adapted to fit the artist's work. The city has general liability insurance that will cover the artwork over the yearlong period.
The city will assist in the installation of the winning piece and pay a $500 stipend to the artist.
Artists should submit photographs, slides or digital images of existing pieces or proposals substantiated by past work, and a resume to mccann@ci.ojai.ca.us or mail to Kathy McCann, redevelopment manager, at the city of Ojai, P.O. Box 1570, Ojai, CA, 93024.
For more information or a tour of the space, call McCann at 646-5581, ext. 111, Monday through Wednesday. Information is also available through Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend, Ojai Arts Commission chair, at 640-0078.
