Pa Ventura

To wannabe artists

If you've always yearned to see your creations displayed at the Museum of Ventura County, here's your big chance. Sunday, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., you're invited to paint on the walls that will be bare because the museum is closed for a major renovation.

To celebrants

If you like birthday parties, Moorpark College is holding its 40th today at 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center. Call 378-1431 for information.

To ecologists

What must be your favorite day of the year — Earth Day — is Tuesday,  but the celebration starts in Ventura today with the annual beach cleanup. For more information, call 652-4555.

To commuters

Sen. John McCain wants to help motorists deal with high pump prices by suspending gas taxes. Why not try suspending oil companies' profits, which set a new records every quarter, or at least to impose a windfall tax?

To fun seekers

Ableskivers or lutefisk, anyone? The  Scandinavian Festival  is back at Cal Lutheran this weekend, today and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To taxpayers

Several Ventura County cities are considering tax elections, and facing the Catch-22 about such events: Should the voting be consolidated with a state election to save money, or should a special election be called to get the public's full attention? We vote for saving money.

To book browsers

You have your choice of Friends of the Library sales today — in Ventura at Wright Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and in Port Hueneme, at the Prueter Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To Port Hueneme

Your fair city lost one of its pioneer civic officials with the death of former Mayor Ray Prueter. His name will live on, at the community library.

To shoppers

It takes only a moment to remember to bring a cloth or plastic shopping bag with you, and when throw-away plastic bags become taboo, you'll be glad you got into that habit.

To poets

April is all "yours" — National Poetry Month — whether you consider rhymes as essentials that you pursue, or only as frills that you eschew.

To collectors

The Ferris wheel on the pier in Santa Monica is for sale. The bidding starts at $50,000.

To colleges

The saddest people on college campuses must be the basketball coaches — with so many players turning pro after only one season.

To millionaires

If you're looking to buy a major league baseball team, the Dodgers are valued at $694 million, the Angels at $500 million. The Yankees are the most expensive, at $1.3 billion (with a B), and the Florida Marlins the best bargain at "only" $256 million.

To baseball fans

It was 95 degrees at game time at Dodger Stadium last Sunday, but neither team resorted to wearing shorts — as the old Pacific Coast League Hollywood Stars once did for hot-day games.
