You can hear the faint singing of the Hokey Pokey in the Ventura YMCA parking lot on a Saturday morning. Upon entering the pool area, the song gets louder and louder. Youve just stumbled upon Teacher Tim Hansen's parent-child swim class. Twelve parent-child pairs, made up of both moms and dads take part in this swim class that includes water orientation, basic swim movements of kicking and arms, and of course fun and play. Each class includes numerous songs. I get the whole pool deck to stand up and do the Hokey Pokey with me and my classes, states Hansen.
All parent-child programs are for children ages 6 months to 3 and half years old. Swim classes are 30 minutes each in length and are taught in a 92 degree therapeutic pool. The YMCA also offers a Gym and Swim Class which includes 30 minutes of gymnastics, singing and parachute play followed by 30 minutes of instruction in the pool. Classes run for 8 weeks. Summer registration is going on now and the session begins the week of June 23rd.
I teach the children through their parents, states instructor Kay Woodburn. The parent gives the 12.3. jump command, and the child listens. Teacher Kay has been teaching for 19 years at the YMCA and Enjoys the little ones as much now as I did when I first began. All our parent-child classes require parent involvement. Its also a great bonding experience for many families. The Laber Family has been involved with Teacher Tim' program for over 4 years. They began in 2004 with their oldest son Noah, now 5. Since then, son Benji has participated in parent-child classes and has just moved on to our group swim lessons. Daughter Caroline, 1, began our program when she was just 6 months old. Our boys have grown up at the YMCA. Its great seeing them progress through the swim program, says Ellen Laber, the childrens mother.
Classes are going on now and run in the mornings, evenings and weekends to fit every schedule. Contact Amber Stevens, Aquatics Director for more information, 642-2131 ext. 19 www.venturaymca.org
