Short-term vacation rentals to have bed tax
Ventura will start charging its bed tax on short-term vacation rentals, the City Council decided Monday.
The city's 10 percent transit occupancy tax will be collected on homes registered with the city to be rented out for 30 days or less, with the revenue likely to help pay for sand removal and other maintenance in beach neighborhoods.
Exactly how much money the bed tax will generate is unclear, officials said. No such tax is currently collected on short-term rental homes.
About 50 homes have been rented out in years past, residents say. Some fetch more than $4,000 a week in the summer.
The council decision came as part of a vote to continue working on a long-term plan to move and better manage encroaching sand dunes outside homes in the Pierpont area.
Residents have cast the plan as flawed, and the council asked the city staff to improve collaboration with the Pierpont Community Council.
Nonetheless, the property owners likely will shoulder the cost of clearing sand that has encroached on their homes and damaged property.
Faced with looming budget cuts, city officials have proposed cutting $65,000 used to clean debris on state-controlled beaches in the area.
The city, however, will pay $162,000 to help hire lifeguards during the summer.
