Sheriff's Department officials released some new details Tuesday about a weekend shooting in El Rio that left a 13-year-old boy dead, but they still would not say if investigators suspect the killing was intentional or accidental.

A 17-year-old boy was in the room when Jaime Segura, 13, was shot in the head in the 1100 block of East Collins Street about 4:23 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Sheriff's Department. Jaime died shortly thereafter at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

The 17-year-old was arrested on a probation violation unrelated to the shooting and was being held in Juvenile Hall this week, said sheriff's spokesman Capt. Ross Bonfiglio.

The 17-year-old, who was not named because he is a juvenile, is a "person of interest" in the shooting, Bonfiglio said. He declined, however, to say if detectives believe the teen was the person who shot Jaime. Bonfiglio said investigators have not discounted the possibility that another person could be the shooter.

Neither Jaime nor the 17-year-old lived at the residence where the shooting occurred, Bonfiglio said.

Jaime lived in Nyeland Acres. Bonfiglio would not say where the other boy lived.

Jaime's mother and several friends this week said he was at a friend's home when he was shot.

Forensic experts Tuesday were still sifting through evidence to determine if the shooting was intentional, accidental or criminally negligent, Bonfiglio said.

He declined to comment on details such as the relationship between the two teens or where the gun came from, citing the continuing investigation.

"There are too many unanswered questions," Bonfiglio said. "There's still potential evidence that could be uncovered, that if that information is not made universally public, could help us answer some of these unanswered questions."

Hopefully, busting the 17 year old on a probabation violation will be only the first in a chain of arrests. Whose residence? Whose gun? Was it stolen? Adults present?

All of you gang sympathizers out there, if you truly care about your "hood," perhaps you might try to educate parents. With kids under 18, they have a responsibility to know where the kids are, who they are hanging with, how they are doing in school, and more. There is no excuse.
