Candidates for local office to appear at debate
Candidates for Ventura County supervisor, superior court judge and U.S. congressional representative were invited this week to appear at two debate-style forums scheduled for the first week of May.
The debates will be sponsored by the California Association of Political Centrists, California Lutheran University, and The Star. Star Editor Joe Howry will select the questions, and CLU Political Science Department Chairman Gregory Freeland will serve as moderator, according to an announcement from the CAPC.
The first forum will be held May 2 and will include candidates for the two contested supervisorial races: the 3rd District and the 5th District. The second forum is scheduled for May 6 and the candidates for the 24th Congressional District are invited.
On each night, the candidates for judge will introduce themselves and give brief statements but will not debate.
Both forums will be held at 7 p.m. on the CLU campus in Thousand Oaks.
The candidates for 3rd District Supervisor in the June 3 election are incumbent Kathy Long and challenger Socorro Lopez-Hanson. In the 5th District, incumbent John Flynn faces challengers John Zaragoza and Denis O'Leary.
Congressman Elton Gallegly faces Republican challenger Michael Tenenbaum. In the Democratic primary, the candidates are Mary Pallant, Jill Martinez and Marta Jorgensen.
The candidates for judge are prosecutor Jeff Bennett and Assistant County Counsel Roberto Orellana.
