Officials won't comment on investigation of chief

Fillmore city officials remained mum Friday about an investigation into the alleged misuse of public funds by Fire Chief Pete Egedi.

Egedi, 38, was placed on paid leave Monday. Ventura County Sheriff's Department officials said they are looking into whether he misused public money.

Councilwoman Patti Walker offered little comment about the case when contacted Friday, saying the city needed to respect Egedi's privacy.

Councilwoman M. Cecilia Cuevas this week referred all questions to City Manager Tom Ristau.

Ristau, however, did not return numerous phone calls.

Mayor Steve Conaway also did not return a call seeking comment Friday.

Egedi is an "at-will" city employee and does not have a contract, officials said earlier this week. He receives an annual base salary of $79,000.

Egedi became the city's fire chief on July 13, 2005. Before that, he was a volunteer captain with the 72-member department. Most of those who work for the department are volunteers.
