NPHS VS ROYAL
On Friday, April 11, 2008 the Newbury Park Panthers played Royal High School at home. All three of the Panther teams played as a team and with all heart!
VARSITY LOST IN 3 (Game Scores: 20/25, 16/25, 17/25)
It was a tough night for the Panther boys as the Marmonte League leading Royal came to town. With big-hitting and blocking the Panthers fell behind in each of the three games and couldn't rally back.
On a night when the Royals were pounding kill after kill, Stephen stepped up for 2 big blocks. Stephen Santos had the best game of his young career as he made 6 big kills for the night. Brady Johnson was sporting a faux tattoo on his forearm in memory of friend. Johnson seemed to be inspired as he got big at the net and led the Panthers with 3 blocks. Johnson also made 2 kills, one which seemed to bounce on the 2 foot line. Even Johnson's serving game was on as he made a big ace at the end of the third game.
Travis Zeller's chinstrap was back but it wasn't enough to shut down the opposition. Zellers' big leap allowed him to hit over the blocks, as he recorded 7 kills for the night.
Trevor Willenberg, again led the team with 10 kills. Trevor's night started off tough as his accurate hitting seemed to tool the opposition, but no calls were made. He quickly adjusted to play calling and began working the middle of the court. Trevor's pipe was also on, as he pounded the ball from the back court to keep the pioneer block off guard.
Mickey Kelleher posted to big roofs against the Highlander's outside. He also made several big digs to keep the ball in play. The back court stepped-up tonight and made great passes. Kevin Alvarez led the team with 28 digs including a pancake off a hard spike. Jonathon Ramirez passing helped Colby Cameron deliver the ball accurately to his hitters Colby finished with 30 assists for the night. Micah Smith has worked his way into the rotation and continues to help his team. He led the team with 2 aces.
After the game Coach Jorge said that he felt the boys played a great match. He was really happy with the passing for the night. He is happy with the progress that the team is making. The Panthers now go a three (3) game road trip and will need all the fan support that they can get.
JUNIOR VARSITY (J/V) LOST IN 3 (Game Scores: 23/25 25/23 12/15)
As Coach Glenn worked on his rotation he remarked that he had the winning rotation for the night. He was almost right as the J/V team did a tremendous job against a tough Pioneer squad. Nick Warnier was a one-man wrecking crew as his passing, blocking, hitting, and setting kept the scores close. The fans were treated to some great volleyball as several long rallies supplied great play after great play. The Highlander's blocking was the difference in the game, as they frustrated the Panthers all night. Brandon Rista did a great job by making 5 kills. In the third game, with the boys down in points, Stephen Tobias came to the serving line and hit 3 great serves in a row, including 2 aces. He also showed his speed as he saved an errant pass by running almost all the way into the snack shack. Austin Keatily did a great job at defense and actually made a kill off of a great dig that shocked the Highlanders. Michael Burns, Matt Jeske, and David Reaves each finished the match with 1 block.
FROSH/SOPH LOST IN 2 (Game Scores: 18/25 21/25)
Dan Dipsia made his first stat of the season and made a solid contribution for the team. Chris Royalty was pounding away at the ball and made 5 kills for the night. In the first game - Royal pulled away in what seemed to be a romp when suddenly the boys came to life. Matt Bonifiglio's 7 serves in a row, and some great defense by Vaughn Wellenreiter the boys fought their way back, to make it a close game. During the second game, Sean Garry made an outstanding play by blocking a hard hit straight-up. He landed and jumped to power the ball for a kill. Vaughn Served 6 in a row to keep the Panthers close. It was a tough night but the boys refused to go down without a fight.
