NPHS Volleyball Took On Calabasas
Friday, April 4, 2008:
The Newbury Park High School Panthers Took On The Calabasas Coyotes at Newbury Park High.
NPHS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL WON IN 3 (Game Scores 25-18, 25-23, 25-12)
After a tough 2007 season, the Calabasas Coyotes have started the 2008 season with a strong base to build future teams with. The Panther Gym had a great crowd for all three matches and the boys really appreciated the positive noise made by the cheering section.
Travis Zeller was under the weather with the flu, so he sat out the first game. This gave Micah Smith a chance to show off his power at the net. He immediately turned into an impact player, pounding his spikes through the defenses arms, for kills. Micah finished with 5 kills and showed Coach Jorge the future of the team.
Game two, Travis moved to his old position of middle blocker. Jonathon Ramirez and Kevin Alvarez traded the white shirt of the libero and did well. Jonathon finished with 8 digs and a kill and Kevin with 9 digs.
Coach Jorge decided to switch up the team a bit to let the boys try new rotations. Mickey Kelleher moved to setter and Colby Cameron moved to opposite. Although it appeared that a couple players need a road map to figure out the changes, the Big Cats didn't miss a beat at the net. Mickey finished with 12 assists and 4 kills while Colby had fun at the opposite with 6 kills. Trevor Willenberg and Brady Johnson finished up the night tied for 9 kills each. On defense Brady dig great with 3 blocks and Stephen Santos posted 2 blocks.
Next week is a big week for the panthers as we go against the league leading and two of the top rated teams in the CIF; T.O. Lancers on Wednesday at Panther Gym and Royal on Friday. We will need every fan we can to help the boys out on this tough week
NPHS JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) WON IN 2 (Game Scores 25-10, 30-28)
Royce Wells really showed-off his versatility by posting 3 kills, 4 aces, 4 blocks and 9 assists. Steven Tobias made 7 digs from the back court. Austin Kebely has done a great job at setting the hitters and spreading the ball around. Austin's 25 assists were nearly half of all the points scored. Brandon Rista and Matt Jeske showed off how well-rounded they are by making great plays from both the front row and back row. Brandon finished the match with 6 kills 5 digs, while Matt ended with 6 kills 10 digs.
