Wednesday, April 9, 2008:

The Newbury Park High School Panthers Take Their Local Rival The Thousand Oaks Lancers at Newbury Park High.

NPHS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL LOST IN 3 (Game Scores 17-25, 17-25, 26-28)

On a sad and somber night students, faculty and players of NPHS met the Lancers. The Panthers took the court following a moment in silence in honor of the NPHS student who died in a tragic car crash and for the hope of healing for the three students who were still in the hospital. The team looked drained as play began.

The Lancers jumped to a big lead against the Cats behind some hard hitting and spectacular sets. Colby Cameron made two smart dumps and Trevor Willenberg hit two big pipes for kills to slow down T.O. and start to bring the Panthers back within striking distance. Unfortunately, the Panthers couldn't match points against the Lancers. Brady Johnson played hard even though he was recovering from the flu.

Stephen Santos started the second game with a big block in the middle. Mickey Kelleher got a big block out on the opposite to stop a T.O. run. Kevin Alvarez followed-up with three aces in a row. Colby showed his athleticism by saving two overpasses at the net. Colby and Mickey made two spectacular digs on the same play while Micah Smith made a great diving dig which passed perfectly to Stephen Santos for a kill.

The third game Coach Jorge decided to mix things up and try some different rotations. Jonathon Ramirez came in as back row while Smith rotated to outside and Travis Zeller went to middle.

Game Stats for the night: - Willenberg finished with 8 kills, Zeller with 7 and Keller with 5. Santos finished with 3 blocks and Kelleher had 2. Alvarez had 27 digs, Willenberg had 23 digs, and Smith finished with 17.

NPHS JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) WON IN 2 (Game Scores 26-24, 26-24)

The Panthers JV squad started out slow and fell behind quickly. Harrison Ang made a well placed tip and the panthers started posting points. Brandon Rista made some hard serves that put the Lancer defenders on their heals. Great digs by Steven Tobias and Austin Ketaily kept the ball in play for the Panthers. Ketaily was throwing his body all over the court, to get to the ball. Royce Wells made some great, acrobatic sets that helped Nick Warginer post 8 kills for the night. David Reaves had some thundering hits at the net and did a great job pulling blockers away from the outside hitters. The Panthers put up a big lead in the second game but the Lancers started a rally and the momentum appeared to change sides. With the Lancers pounding the balls, suddenly the front line of David Reaves, Michael Burns and Nick Warginer each had big blocks to shut down T.O and finish the game.

Game Stats: Brandon Rista had 3 aces. Steven Tobias had 12 digs; Nick Warginer had 8 kills while Michael Burns had 4 kills.

NPHS FROSH/SOPH WON IN 2 (Game Scores 25-19, 28-26)

The NPHS Frosh/Soph team had a spectacular night. The Panthers played hard and two strong games against Thousand Oaks Lancers beating them in 2 games. Vaughn Wellenreiter made his first start of the year and showed that he could handle both offense and defense. He finished the night with 3 kills and 3 digs. Sean Garry led the team with 6 kills and 4 blocks. Chris Royalty made 7 digs on defense while making 5 kills. Alex Ostrovsky and Matt Bonifiglio each had 3 digs and combined for 17 assists.
