Ventura County schools earn state honor

More from Education: K-12Eight elementary schools in Ventura County have been named California Distinguished Schools, earning recognition for academic achievement, outstanding teaching and parental involvement.
The schools are Peach Hill Academy in the Moorpark Unified School District; Oak Hills, Oak Park Unified School District; Laguna Vista, Ocean View School District; La Mariposa, Pleasant Valley School District; White Oak, Simi Valley Unified School District; and Lang Ranch, Sycamore Canyon and Meadows in the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
This year, 343 public elementary schools in 39 counties received the award. Elementary and secondary schools are recognized during alternating years.
Laguna Vista Principal Suzanne Lange announced the award at school Wednesday after getting a call from state schools Superintendent Jack O'Connell earlier this week.
"I'm very proud and very pleased, because the staff sees a recognition of all their hard work," she said. "And the students feel they've done a great job."
The awards are based on academic performance, teaching, leadership, parental involvement and safety, among other factors. Schools submit applications, selection teams visit each school and winners are chosen by the California Department of Education and the California County Superintendents Education Services Association.
