LACROSSE
Battle of the Unbeatens
Lacrosse had two big showdowns on Saturday at Peppertree Park in Newbury Park. The Thousand Oaks Knights seventh- and eight-grade team and Westlake Blue both brought unblemished 4-0 records into the game and the game was everything everyone expected. Westlake scored three goals in the last five minutes to tie the score at 8 and send the game into sudden-death overtime. The Knights won the face off in overtime, but were unable to convert. Westlake quickly moved the ball downfield and only a spectacular save by the Knights goalie, Dane Griffin, prevented a Westlake goal. Thousand Oaks then converted on a shot by Connor Doyle on the ensuing fastbreak to seal the Knights victory, 9-8. At the same time on the other field, Thousand Oaks and Westlake's undefeated fifth- and sixth-grade teams battled for first place in its age group. The Knights came away with another victory over a tough Westlake team, 8-3.
GIRLS' SOFTBALL
Simi Valley Association
8-and-under Division
Blue Angels, 4, Lil' Rascals 0
The Blue Angels opened the second half in style as Jagger Datan started a rally in the third inning with a double to center field. That set the momentum for Grace Michielsen, Ashley Ha, Callie Clark and Gracie Suchomel, who followed with base hits to secure the victory.
Simi Storm 5, Lil' Bratz 0
Tanner Breeden, Haven Tagg and Andrea Cady each contributed two hits en route to a victory. Cady was in the zone on the mound as well, registering six strikeouts in three innings. Vivionna Robles was outstanding on defense for the Lil' Bratz.
10-and-under Division
CIA 7, Smokin' Bases 3
The Chicks in Action came alive in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded double to center field by Kira Czyrklis, clearing the bases. Jessica Stafford followed with a base hit to bring in Czyrklis.
12-and-under Division
Cyclones 8, Xplosion 2
Madison Ward was on fire, striking out six batters in the first three innings. Miranda Rodden drove in two runs with a single, stole three bases and scored a run.
The Crew 8, Xpolosion 7
The Crew rallied to beat Xplosion in the last inning with five hits, including a triple by April Foster, double by Allisa Grant and a game-winning single by Rachel Carpenter.
Hot Tamales 9, Git 'er Done 3
A tight 3-3 pitcher's duel between Samantha Ohmie and Allison Parker was broken open in the fourth inning, thanks in part to a triple by Karly Glen and a double by Hannah McKee that rallied the Hot Tamales to victory.
Show Me the Money 4, Black Lightning 3
A two-run homer by Annie Tocyzinski gave Black Lightning a 3-2 lead, but Summer Pohl and Desiree Dunbar of Money rallied to tie the game with clutch hits, while Lauren Loy was hit by a pitch and hustled all the way home from first base on an errant throw.
Peeps 3, Black Lightning 2
Samantha Fassl of the Peeps was crafty against a usually electrifying Lightning offense, pitching out of jams to secure the victory. Lightning's Tina Cady looked to provide late- inning heroics with a monster hit to the gap in right-center, but was stranded on base. Kailey Hauke's stellar defensive plays in right field shut down two rallies by the Peeps to keep the game a nail biter, earning herself the game ball.
BASKETBALL
Seventh Annual Yosemite Spring Fling
The Ventura Fusion sixth-grade girls won another tournament as they competed in Oakhurst. Twelve girls' teams from around the state attended with six in the Gold Division, including the Fusion team. The Fusion went undefeated as it won two games on Saturday, first against the host Yosemite Badgers, 35-11, and then against the Tulare Thunder, 45-27. The Fusion advanced to Sunday's championship game against the undefeated and seasoned Clovis West Eagles. The Fusion team's speed was the deciding factor as it outscored Clovis West, 37-17. Speedy guard Holly Guzman took MVP honors. Coaches are Jared Smith and Bill Smith. Players include Aubri Smith, Natalie Smith, Madison Foulks, Madeline McCormick, Kayalin Matthews-Irby, Alliea Jordon, Jessica Murillo, Camille Werner, Cleo Matthews-Irby and Jasmyne Watkins.
The 13-and-under Breakers defeated Yosemite, 55-29, in the High School Division final. The 10-and-under Nets went 3-1 to win a trophy for the young team. The Ventura Galaxy High School Division girls finished second. The Fusion eighth-grade girls defeated the Oakland Bruins, 42-22, for the Gold Division championship. Scott Werner was the coach. The Fusion seventh-grade girls won the championship.
This was done after beating the Clovis West Eagles, 52-43, and the North County Swoosh, 35-26, in the first round of the eight- team gold division. The Fusion played in a nail-biting championship game against the Hanford Elite. With 35 seconds on the clock Hanford tied the game at 38. Fusion 7 set up an in-bounds play that went wrong and quick-acting guard Sabrina Lee with only seconds left in the game took a shot from beyond the arc to win game 48. Lee took the game's MVP award. Jim Pando is the coach.
Four of the six Ventura teams brought home championship trophies. All Fusion teams are part of the Ventura Wildcat Girls' Basketball organization.
