GERRY AND JOAN OLSEN CELEBRATE THEIR 50TH
Gerry and Joan Olsen, of Camarillo, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary Saturday, April 12, at the Camarillo United Methodist Church with more than 150 relatives and friends present.
With an interest in geology in common, Gerry and Joan met in 1957 at a meeting of the Rockhounds Club in the Art Barn of Thousand Oaks. As the only members under the age of 50, they were elected President and Secretary and tasked with writing bylaws for the club. That gave Gerry an excuse to get Joan?s phone number.
Gerry will never forget his anxiety when stopped by the Highway Patrol on Malibu Canyon Road the night they became engaged. With the ring in his pocket, he envisioned being carted off to jail and proposing there. He was so relieved when the patrolman let him off with a warning to keep both hands on the wheel and stay on his own side of the road.
Gerry and Joan were married April 12, 1958 and have enjoyed living in Camarillo for 48 years. They have two children; both still living in Ventura County. Carole and her husband, Guy Bryan, of Ventura were married in the Camarillo UMC in 1980. Doug and his wife, Jane, of Ojai were married in an outdoor ceremony at the Ventura County Courthouse in 2004.
Gerry worked as Editor of the Camarillo News, and Public Information Officer for the Ventura County Community College District and Moorpark College. Joan composed technical manuals and worked as an electronic technician before transferring to a position as Data and Configuration Manager at Pacific Missile Test Center, Point Mugu.
Both Gerry and Joan are now retired and active volunteers. Gerry is Secretary of the Boards of Directors of the Camarillo Ranch Foundation and FOOD Share, President of the Volunteer Guild of the Camarillo Health Care District, and Chair of the Moorpark HS Reunion Committee. Joan is a member of the Camarillo Quilters Association and Chancel Choir, prepares lunches for Habitat for Humanity volunteers, and is Vice President of the United Methodist Woman. Both are active with the Camarillo United Methodist Church..
