Resident says he saw mountain lion

A Ventura resident spotted a mountain lion at his home at the edge of the city early Monday morning, he told police.

The man called police about 1 a.m. after he heard footsteps on the roof of his home in the 100 block of Southview Circle at the edge of Ventura, said Sgt. Jack Richards of the Ventura Police Department.

When he went outside to investigate, the man saw an animal he identified as a mountain lion in his back yard, Richards said.

The man told police the mountain lion was about the size of a golden retriever, Richards said.

He said he confronted the animal with a baseball bat, then retreated after it roared at him.

The big cat later ran onto a nearby hillside.

When police arrived, they heard the animal rustling in the brush, Richards said. They did not see the animal and could not confirm it was a mountain lion.
