New design for Campus Plaza art approved
Moorpark council rejected earlier proposal
The Moorpark City Council unanimously approved Wednesday a new design for an art piece that will be placed in a courtyard at the Campus Plaza shopping center.
It is the second design the council considered for the center. The first design — a large story stone with hieroglyphics — was rejected in January by the majority of the council.
The new design includes a bronze sculpture of three children standing on a log next to a dry cobblestone streambed. A large California sycamore tree, several large boulders, native grasses, and accent lighting will also be included as part of the design.
The art piece, which will stand more than 6 feet high, will be in front of stores toward the rear of the shopping center.
Lee Newman, a landscape architect, was hired by the shopping center's developer, M&M, to design the art piece.
Under the development permit for the center, the developer is required to install a public art project on the site.
An ad hoc committee, including Mayor Pro Tem Janice Parvin and Councilman Mark Van Dam, worked with the developer to redesign the art piece after council members expressed concerns that the initial sculpture would not look right in a shopping center.
"We took everything that everybody talked about (at the previous meeting) and tried to put that into this project," Parvin said.
"(The new design) is very similar to what we're seeing in other areas of the state. It's a nice artistic feature that we don't really have on that side of the community right now."
