Group for distressed homeowners to meet

Moving Forward, a nonprofit, peer-based support group for distressed homeowners, will start group meetings this week, organizers announced.

The first session will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Friday. The group will meet on the first and third Friday of every month at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, 1360 S. Wendy Drive, at the corner of Wendy Drive and Potrero Road, in Newbury Park.

Moving Forward's goal is to help homeowners cope with the stresses created by the foreclosure process and to educate homeowners about available options when navigating through the foreclosure process, a spokesman said.

In addition to peer-based support, Moving Forward will have a licensed marriage and family counselor/therapist in select meetings to assist homeowners in coping with the emotional side of foreclosure.

Future Moving Forward meetings will present speakers who are industry professionals to discuss real estate, tax liability, short sales, personal finance, bankruptcy, and how to avoid foreclosure scams.

Moving Forward was founded by Newbury Park homeowners Mike and Kristin Bertrand.
