City plans events for Arbor Day Saturday
Simi Valley will hold its eighth annual Arbor Day celebration at 10 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Plaza in Rancho Tapo Community Park.
A highlight of the ceremony will be planting cherry trees to posthumously honor local citizens who gave their time and talents to make Simi Valley a better place, city officials said.
Those who will be honored include late Los Angeles Police Officer Mike Selleh, Simi Valley Police Officer Gary Galloway, former city employees Sam Freed and Brian Medley and Richard Hlebasko, who is credited with initiating Rancho Tapo Veterans Plaza.
"It will be an honor to dedicate the trees to honor those who serve their community," Councilwoman Barbra Williamson said in a statement.
This year's program theme focuses on the National Arbor Day Foundation theme of "Trees are Terrific ... Inside and Out."
People will be greeted by a chainsaw wood-carving demonstration by Cherie Currie, posters by local fifth-grade classes that participated in the poster contest, and a hands-on educational workshop and other activities throughout the day. Awards will be presented to the winners of the poster contest.
Refreshments will be served and a limited supply of 15-gallon trees and oak seedlings will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 583-6393. The park is at 3700 Avenida Simi.
