Football '07-Sept. 20-21>>Rusted shut, an old school bell on the Calabasas High campus has not rung in five years.
Before today's 10 a.m. announcements, it will be cleaned and greased, promised school principal Vincent Jantz.
It will ring loud and clear with the declaration that the football program's 44-game losing streak, the third longest in state history, has ended.
The state record is 46 straight losses by Moorpark from 1977 to 1982.
There was no storming of the field by the team's backers Thursday night as Calabasas (1-2) defeated Channel Islands (0-4), 28-14, on the road.
Only a splash of water to the back of first-year coach Lance Martin and a mad sprint to an end zone to celebrate as a team were the extent of the Coyotes' first win since the eighth game of the 2002 season.
Serop Chalian completed 17 of 19 passes for 216 yards and two TD passes and the Calabasas defense allowed only 44 yards through the first three quarters.
"Our only goal was to end this streak," said Chalain. "I can't express how great a feeling that it is."
Calabasas wasn't the only team with cause to rejoice.
After being held scoreless for five consecutive games, Channel Islands found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter on a 55-yard halfback-option pass from Marco Estrada to Albert Buenrostro and a 1-yard run by Carlos Sanchez.
The Channel Islands defense stopped Calabasas on four consecutive drives with a blocked field goal by Kyle Rivera, an interception by Christopher Callaway and fumble recoveries by Eric Almaguer and Koa Aupiu.
Calabasas couldn't have scripted a better opening half.
Chalin completed his first 10 passes for 158 yards and two TDs as well as scoring on a 1-yard run as Calabasas opened a gaping 28-0 lead.
The Coyotes scored on their first four possessions.
"We didn't finish the way that we should have," said Martin, who won his first game as a head coach.
"We're getting into the meat of our schedule, so we have to get better."
That will be the team's focus as it returns to practice today, said Martin.
The weight of the 44-game losing streak was a heavy burden to carry, said Jantz.
"The win removes an impediment that I don't think that the team deserved," he said. "This is a testament to the coaches and players who hung in there."
With Channel Islands quarterback Frankie Romero sidelined with a separated shoulder sustained in a loss last week to Buena, reserve Juan Jimenez and the rest of the Raiders offense struggled.
Channel Islands had the ball for only 17 plays in the first half for a net 26 yards.
Chris Badger and Shyan Ardalan intercepted passes for Calabasas.
After scoring only two field goals in its first two games, Calabasas put 21 points on the scoreboard in the first 14 minutes.
The wildest mass celebration came on Calabasas' first TD.
Chalian delivered a 40-yard TD pass to Alain Dalencourt with 7:53 left in the first quarter. With 43 seconds left in the quarter, Justin Cudworth scored on a 2-yard run.
Badger's interception return to the Channel Islands 38-yard line placed Calabasas in position for its third TD, a 25-yard pass from Chalian to Cameron Ventura.
Two Chalian passes helped Calabasas drive inside the Raiders' 10-yard line. With 4:51 left, Chalian scored on a 1-yard keeper.

The Channel Islands Raiders suck that bad this year? Wow. They beat Calabasass last year like 62 to nothing? This year 14-28. That game sucked. Raiders didn't do anything, but watch Calbasass score during the first half. Third quarter nothing really happened. Then fourth Raiders actually broke through Calabassas' offense. Ci can't catch the ball at all. I don't even know why Machado even bothers having practices and having sixth period with them. There is no hope for the Raiders and no point to them even bothering wasting their time this year.
