Oxnard man wounded in apparently unprovoked shooting
From staff reports
The shooting that wounded one man in Oxnard last night was apparently unprovoked, Oxnard police said this morning.
A preliminary investigation concluded that the shooter, who was in a car with three other people, may have had some kind of altercation with a man standing on the 1100 block of South J Street in Oxnard about 7:20 p.m. then stepped out of the vehicle and shot at the man, police said in a prepared statement this morning.
The victim, an 18-year-old Oxnard man, was hit once in the back.
The shooter then got back into the light colored sedan and left the scene. There were two men and two women in the car, but police would not say whether the shooter was male or female.
The victim was transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.
Investigators believe the victim is associated with a gang, Oxnard police spokesman David Keith said in an e-mail. But detectives had not established a motive for the shooting Friday morning, so they cannot say whether or not it was a gang crime.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Det. Jeff Long at 486-6506.

This sounds much like the description of the car and occupants of the car that shot the 10 year old girl on Kohala St. last week...is this the beginning of a shooting spree?

In these cases, I wonder how often it is that the injured party CAN identify his assailant(s), but doesn't so he can seek revenge later. I have no idea if it's true in this case, but I suspect it's more common than not.
Gang injunction court documents report several instances in which injured gang members refused to ID witnesses to a shooting, so as to not expose those persons to police questioning. In these cases, if police can prove that the injured party really knew his attacker but wouldn't disclose it, the injured party should be charged with a crime, too, something along the lines of "impeding a felony investigation." What other way do police have of stopping the circle of violence?
I, too, question whether the incident was tuly "unprovoked" if it stemmed from some "altercation." Chances are, someone knows more than what they're sharing with police. If so, when can we expect the next drive-by shooting?

jfhiggins: Well i can only assume that you are less than street smart. Mind your own business even if you are a witness. If you want to be labeled as a "RAT" go ahead and talk to the cops. As for charging someone who might be a witness or refuses to press charges on the person. That's their business and their sole right to do so last time i checked the Penal Code.

and then I suppose they would also be willing to pay the bill for the cost of Police, EMT, ER, etc, etc?

I hope that this is not a part of the Blacks vs. Latinos race war that is brewing all over California. I really hope that they find out who did this and throw the book (and maybe a few bullets or a few volts) at them. They oughtta just enforce the gang injunction county-wide. To hell with the ACLU and political correctness. When it is safe for people of ALL CREEDS to walk the streets, they'll thank it.
