Ask Jean

Question: How can we keep our 10-year-old son interested in reading? He seems more interested in TV and video games.

Answer: I'm a big believer in magazine subscriptions for kids. If you can, find one that appeals to his interests — whether it's sports or nature. You can find young people's magazines in most bookstores, so you might let him try a few before you spend the money on a subscription.

You can also try to find books that tie into his interests. A librarian could help you with this.

Some kids like books of jokes or sports trivia. It might not be great literature, but it might keep him reading.

Basically, if he's interested in what the book's about, he'll be more likely to read it.

And remember, you can serve as a good role model by reading, too.
