Question: Our child is struggling with a new experience: students who disrupt the class. Any tips on how to stay focused during the disruptions?
Answer: First, try talking to your child to get a sense of exactly what's upsetting him. Is it someone tapping a pencil or talking to his classmates, which you're going to find in most classrooms? Or is it something more serious?
If it's typical classroom behavior, you and your child could talk about ways he can cope. Maybe he could move to another part of the room. Or politely tell the person that his behavior is distracting. Or just try to tune it out.
If it's something more serious than that, the teacher should be informed. If your child is in elementary school, you should talk to the teacher. If he's in high school, he can talk to the teacher himself. Your child has the right to be in a classroom without major disruptions.
