Out with the old, in with the new
Eric Parsons / Star staff Port Hueneme 9/18/07. WCA Tree Trimmer Gerardo Jimenez keeps a safe distance in his hydraulic lift as a crane lowers a large section of eucalyptus tree that he had just cut along Ventura Road next to Navy Base Ventura County Port Hueneme on Tuesday afternoon. Before cutting a section of a tree, Jimenez secured a cable from a tall crane around the trunk, thereby allowing his coworkers to safely lower the suspended piece to the ground.

Fallen Trees >>Photos by Eric Parsons / Star staff
Gerardo Jimenez, a tree trimmer with WCA, spent his Tuesday afternoon high above Ventura Road in a lift bucket, where he cut massive sections of eucalyptus trees next to Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme. Citing safety and security concerns, the Navy is removing 300 of the decades-old trees and planting 100 California sycamore trees in their place. Under a revised schedule, the tree removal work will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The No. 2 and 3 southbound lanes on Ventura Road from Teakwood Street to Bard Road will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday through 3 p.m. on Saturday every week until the project is completed.

Very sad that the Navy chose to approach the problem of a few trees needing to be pruned out with such a heavy handed militaristic solution which affects the aesthetics of the entire city. So nice to view the gleaming parking lot of the Px now. Such good neighbors! Good bye monarach butterflies! Find a friendlier town to winter-over.
