Keeping up with the Jones

Who: Mickey Jones.

Claim to fame: Veteran rock 'n' roll drummer, character actor.

Age: 66.

Local tie: Simi Valley resident since 1976.

What's new: A book about his long entertainment career, titled "That Would Be Me: Rock & Roll Survivor to Hollywood Actor," was released last month.

On the skins: Drummed for Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, Johnny Rivers and Trini Lopez. Played on 17 gold or platinum records, by his count, including "If I Had a Hammer," "Secret Agent Man" and "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town." Performed on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1963 with Lopez.

On the screen: Has done more than 80 films, 500 TV show spots and 500 commercials. Played Pete Bilker on "Home Improvement" from 1991-99 (the book's title comes from his trademark line on the show). Was in "Tin Cup" with Kevin Costner and performed "Double Bogey Blues" in the movie.

Early days: Born in Houston and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Family: He and wife Phyllis have been married for 27 years. They have five kids from their previous marriages. His mom, Fran, lives in Simi Valley.

Community: Be it toy drives for needy kids, motorcycle rides to benefit children's hospitals or charity golf tournaments, Jones has long been known for his philanthropical endeavors. "I get more out of it than anyone does," says Jones, "and when I do it in Ventura County, I feel it's my own backyard."

Up next: Slated to shoot a film with a working title of "Dead Man's Bluff" in January in New Mexico. Has reached a deal with Hallmark for a singing greeting card of "Double Bogey Blues." Is working with Rivers on a DVD of the singer's career. Mulling an offer to do a biker reality show.

Mickey is a great all around person. If you have not yet done so, you should meet him. The world would be a better place if there were more like him!
