Newbury Park girls taking a cool idea and running with it
Courtesy of its coach, a cold reward is awaiting the Newbury Park High girls' cross country team at the end of the season.
If Newbury Park qualifies for the state championship, coach Dominique Colell has promised to chisel an ice sculpture for the team.
Newbury Park is warming up to seeing Colell's professional talents put to use.
Despite missing two of its top seven runners to injuries, Newbury Park won the large schools team title with 42 points Saturday at the 20th Ojai Invitational at Lake Casitas.
Burbank was the runner-up with 64 points. Hueneme was third with 86.
Newbury Park's Jenny Mallen was the individual champion with a time of 18 minutes, 47 seconds over the three-mile hilly course. Three teammates finished in the top 12, including Amanda Okun, who was third in 19:34.
"Jenny has a chance to be in the 17's by the end of the year," said Colell.
"With our No. 3 and No. 6 runners out with injuries, the other girls stepped in when we needed it."
Hueneme's Liz Robles was the runner-up in 19:26. Channel Islands' Zuly Jimenez (20:14) and Oxnard's Nycole Cole (20:30) were fifth and seventh, respectively.
With Mission Prep's Jordan Hasay, the course record-holder, watching from the sideline, resting from a long summer of national and international meets, Nordhoff's Catherine Hasbrouck won the small schools individual title in 19:06.
Hasbrouck broke away from St. Bonaventure's Jenessa Rose in the first mile and extended her margin to 24 seconds at the end of the race. It was a 40-second improvement over the time Hasbrouck ran on the course as a freshman last year.
"That is the good thing that came out of this meet," said Hasbrouck. "I am stronger and faster this year."
Over the summer, Hasbrouck increased her mileage and attended a Jim Ryan Camp in Colorado.
Rose was third in 19:31. It was a solid performance for Rose, who had an off year in cross country last fall because of injuries.
Newbury Park was runner-up to Burbank, 30-74, in the large schools boys' division.
The Panthers had a 60-second gap between their top five runners. Steven Bradley was sixth in 17:05.
Surprising Pacifica was only two points behind Newbury Park. Miguel Reyes (16:42) and Sergio Zarate (16:45) were third and fourth.
In the small schools boys' division, Cabrillo won the team title with 30 points. Morro Bay (98) and Nordhoff (106) were second and third.
Joseph Finley (16:47) and Erik Morales (16:55) were sixth and 10th for Nordhoff.
