VAN NUYS — Whichever style led to a win was fine with the Moorpark College football team Saturday night.

Old-fashioned power football worked best in its Western State Conference opener.

James Walker piled up 165 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries and Marcus Hunt finished with 44 yards on seven carries, all in the first half, as Moorpark leaned on its running backs and defense to secure a 33-17 victory over L.A. Valley in its Western State Conference Pacific Division opener at L.A. Valley.

Quarterback Bryan Randolph, off to a solid start in the first two contests, was a modest 10 of 19 for 74 yards and one touchdown. Top receiver Conrad Meadows notched six catches for 43 yards.

It didn't matter to the suddenly grind-it-out Raiders.

Foregoing any hangover from last week's 41-13 loss to No. 2 Saddleback, Moorpark sidestepped any potential ambush in moving to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Valley, despite 102 rushing yards from Anthony Dickson, falls to 0-3 and 0-1.

Leading 20-3 at halftime, Moorpark all but polished off the victory with a two-touchdown flurry to end the third quarter.

A four-play, 22-yard drive, set up by a botched Valley punt, ended with Walker's 9-yard burst up the middle.

Following an interception by Moorpark's Wiston Juene, Randolph connected with Conrad Meadows on a 20-yard scoring pass to open up a 33-3 lead with 59 seconds left in the quarter.

The tone was set in the first quarter on the second play from scrimmage, when Walker busted off a run of 34 yards to set up the Raiders with a first-and-10 at the Valley 11-yard line. Four plays later, Moorpark settled for a 29-yard field goal from Nico Grasu.

Moorpark's ground attack eventually paid big dividends by halftime, with the Raiders in charge of a 20-3 lead.

Touchdown drives on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter did the damage.

The Raiders marched 87 yards in 11 plays, with Walker and Hunt accounting for 65 yards on eight carries.

Walker's 3-yard carry with 7:01 left in the second quarter produced another score.

Following a Valley punt, and a 28-yard punt return by Meadows, Moorpark started with a first down at the Valley 32. Six plays later, Walker rambled in from the 1-yard line for a 20-3 edge with 3:34 left until halftime.

Moorpark's defense yielded 91 rushing yards in the first half, but only a 20-yard field goal from Paul Landon with 4:49 left in the first quarter.

Valley managed a 59-yard drive, powered by Dickson, that reached the Moorpark 6. But the Monarchs managed only 3 yards in three plays, before settling for its field goal.

Valley quarterbacks Troy Jackson and Justin Grantin were a combined 4 of 11 for 53 yards in the first half.

The Moorpark defenders finished with two interceptions.
