Daylong seminar to benefit home gardeners
Backyard gardeners, take note: On Saturday in Santa Paula, the University of California Master Gardener Program will present a seminar of home gardening workshops.
The daylong seminar will take place at the UC Hansen Agricultural Center at Faulkner Farm.
Workshops will be taught by UC Cooperative Extension advisers, who hold academic positions in agriculture and horticulture.
Topics include container gardening, fruit tree selection and water gardening.
Calling it "an exciting learning opportunity," Leah Haynes, volunteer coordinator for the UC Master Gardener Program, said, "It's not often that home gardeners have the chance to take informal classes from such experienced and trained instructors."
Registration is $45 and includes continental breakfast and lunch, plus five workshops. Space is limited.
E-mail VCMGSpeakers@roadrunner.com to request a registration form, or call Chris Webb at 645-1434 for information.
Ventura surf contest honors Solomon's life
In memory of pro surfer Donnie Solomon, the Western Surfing Association will host the 11th annual Donnie Solomon Memorial Pro Am Surf Contest this weekend to benefit the American Red Cross of Ventura County.
The Donnie Solomon Pro Am and the association's circuit surf contest will take place Friday through Sunday at Surfer's Point North in Ventura.
Solomon, a native of Ventura and longtime Red Cross supporter and international Red Cross volunteer, died in December 1995 while surfing a 30-foot wave in Waimea Bay in Hawaii.
Solomon visited Red Cross facilities throughout the world as he traveled. He encouraged other surfers and youths to receive first aid safety training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and lifeguard training.
