Simi Valley will host a Freedom Walk Tuesday to remember the victims of 9/11 on the sixth anniversary of the event.

Billed as the America Supports You Freedom Walk, the event includes a short program prior to the walk, which will honor veterans of all wars, military personnel and their families.

Speakers will include Deena Burnett Baily, whose husband, Tom Burnett, was the ringleader of the small group of men who fought back against the terrorists on United Flight 93. Terry Kraft, captain of the USS Ronald Reagan, and Cpl. Megan Leavey, a Purple Heart recipient from Operation Iraqi Freedom, will also speak.

Local military families also will be in attendance.

An F-18 flyover and honor guard team will round out the ceremony, which begins at 5 p.m.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Musuem joined with the Simi Valley-based MilitaryConnection.com to organize the event, which already has 1,100 people registered.

Organizers say the event could have a bigger turnout than last year's event, which drew about 1,500 people.

"It's nice to get out with neighbors and other people in the community; people certainly find comfort in that," said Debbie Gregory, president of MilitaryConnection.com.

The 1.8-mile route will begin in the Reagan Library's courtyard and will conclude at Rancho Madera Community Park off Wood Ranch Parkway. Free shuttle service will return participants to their cars at the library.

The first 1,000 people who register for the walk will receive a free "Freedom Walk" T-shirt and an American flag. People who would like to attend can meet at the park without participating in the walk.

Also, the library is continuing to collect donations for U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq in the library's main lobby through Sept. 30.

Donated items must be unwrapped and in original packaging.

Items requested by soldiers include: packets of trail mix, peanuts, gum, hard candy and beef jerky; snacks that are not heat sensitive and will not melt in hot temperatures; individual packets of lemonade or Crystal Light for water bottles; CDs and DVDs; used video games; AA batteries; stationery and postage stamps; and pre-paid phone cards.

This is a great idea. When I was over there in 2005, there was no better feeling in the world than getting a care package from home.
