Baby found in car; mom is arrested

Oxnard police freed a 1-year-old boy from a hot car Monday evening and arrested his mother on suspicion of child endangerment, authorities said.

Officers responding to a report of a baby in a car found the boy about 6:30 p.m. in a vehicle parked in front of Circuit City, 421 W. Esplanade Drive, police Sgt. Andrew Salinas said. The car was locked, so officers broke a window to remove the infant, Salinas said. The baby was crying and sweating profusely.

The boy was treated at the scene by paramedics. He did not appear to be injured, police said.

Officers determined the boy had been in the parked car for more than 30 minutes. They located the boy's mother, Darlene Moreno, about 15 minutes after freeing the baby, Salinas said.

Moreno, 25, of Port Hueneme allegedly left her son alone in her car when she went into Circuit City to purchase a cell phone, police said. She had taken another child, a 3-year-old, into the store with her, police said.

Moreno was being held Tuesday at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Both her children were released to a family member, police said.

My prayers are with Ms. Moreno's children. Public records reveal information which indicates this incident is but one in a course of conduct that would lead any reasonable person to be concerned for the safety of any child left in her custody. Lets follow this one closely. It is a good one to use for grading elected officials in our judicial system so we can make better informed choices at the ballot box.

I just don't understand this. Not only could the child have been killed by the heat but he could have been kidnapped by somebody. They should have taken him out of the car and not located her, so that she would of had to call police and report him missing. Give her a little scare and make her realize what she did. Some people just don't think..it's just crazy, poor baby.

I will be watching this case very closely...to be sure the judge throws the book at the mother and does not simply return the child back to his abuser...very sad situation.

Let's lock the mother in the car - maybe she'll get the message. Another brainless person. I always say - "I treat my dog better than some people treat their children."

Children born to brainless people deserve better. Why are brainless people allowed to have kids in the first place?
I hope the childs family will take better care of them and seek child custody of both children. The sad part of all this is the fact that the judges are more than likely let the woman off with a stern warning or a "slap on the wrist" and release the children back into her care. I wish the kids well and hope that they can come to some kind of ending with all the emotiional scarring this is going to have on them. Take care sweet angels...
