The Ventura County Fire Department named a new fire marshal on Tuesday to succeed Diane Morgan, who has led the county's fire prevention efforts for the past 21 years.

Her successor, Christina Jamison, has been a fire prevention officer for the department since 1995. She will step into the fire marshal's office next week, and will work with Morgan for two weeks as she transitions into the new job.

"Diane Morgan has done just an absolutely wonderful job, and I want to continue that," Jamison said. "We're a leader in fire prevention services and we'll continue to be a leader."

The fire marshal reports to the fire chief and deputy chief, and supervises 35 employees in the fire prevention unit. They inspect homes and businesses for compliance with fire and building codes, run community education programs to teach students and others how to prevent fires, administer the brush-clearing program to reduce the risk of fires, and disseminate information to the public during a fire or other emergency.

Jamison, 42, lives in Camarillo and is originally from the Santa Cruz area. She's a licensed marine captain who ran ships out of harbors in Orange County before coming to Ventura County to work for the fire department in 1995.

Jamison is also a member of the State Building Standards Commission.

She was chosen for the fire marshal spot after a search that included candidates from both inside and outside the department, Fire Chief Bob Roper said in a statement released Tuesday.

The position of fire marshal pays $86,000 to $120,000 a year, according to the county's human resources Web site.
