Notebook: Edwards wins prestigious tourney in playoff
Justin Edwards of Westlake Village made a birdie on the first playoff hole to beat Kyle Holden of Simi Valley and win the Ventura County Junior Championship at Sterling Hills Golf Club in Camarillo.
Edwards and Holden shot 7-over 291 over the four days in the 72-hole championship. The win also earned Edwards a valuable American Junior Golf Association exemption.
Westlake's Brandon Hagy finished one stroke out of the playoff. Hagy was 8 over for the tournament, leaving him in third place.
In the girls' championship division, Shannon Holden of Simi Valley turned in a solid performance to win the title. Holden, the 2007 points leader, fired a four-round total of 20-over 308 from the white tees. Like Edwards, she earned an AJGA exemption with the win. La Reina's Kelsey Conway finished second.
In the B Flight (14- and 15-year-old boys), Ryan Sarmiento of Malibu cruised to victory with an 8-over 292. Preston Walker of Oak Park was second at 312, followed by Matt Mungovan of Moorpark at 313.
In the D Flight (12- and 13-year-old boys), Brandon Shaw of Westlake Village finished at 310, seven strokes ahead of Walker Huddy of Studio City.
Hole-in-one report: Garrick Newman of Westlake Village scored his first hole in one at Westlake's 170-yard 13th hole with a 5-iron. It was witnessed by Clint Howard.
Robert Tripp had a hole in one on Buenaventura's 130-yard fifth hole. It was witnessed by Daniel Gray, Juan Hernandez and Jose Martinez.
Michael Sugg of Moorpark aced the 146-yard 12th hole at the Vineyard Course at River Ridge. Sugg used an 8-iron. It was witnessed by Tyler Hannack.
Larry Zarybricky made a hole in one on the 138-yard second hole at Los Robles Greens. He used a 7-iron. It was witnessed by Walt Warner and Skipp Gregg.
Women's academy coming: Sally Quinlan, director of instruction at Los Robles Greens, is planning to start a women's golf academy.
It will feature four levels of instruction and is designed to take players from novice to seasoned golfers. The academy will be presented in four levels:
Level 1 will offer basic swing instruction, along with covering golf etiquette.
Level II will include study of the short game, full swing and golf rules.
Level III will cover course management, bunker play and shaping shots.
Level IV will offer small group instrution using video and on course play.
