T.O. woman still ready for a good game at 101
Julia Kelen, an Atria Hillcrest resident in Thousand Oaks, celebrated her 101st birthday Aug. 16 with family, friends and staff.
Congressman Elton Gallegly also extended his birthday wishes to Kelen with a birthday card that was presented to her during the celebration.
Kelen was born in Hungary. She arrived at Atria Hillcrest in 2003 still fit and engaged with the world around her.
When Kelen reached a century of living last year, Mayor Dennis Gillette officially proclaimed Aug. 16 as Julia Kelen Day in Thousand Oaks.
"Julia is a wonderful woman whose mind is sharp as a tack and who takes great pride in herself," said Sharyn Houselog, Engage Life Director at Atria Hillcrest.
"She loves her family, and we are honored to celebrate this special day with her," Houselog added.
During her time at Atria Hillcrest, Kelen loves to be with friends and enjoys cooking Hungarian meals and desserts.
She is also an enthusiastic fan of rummy tile and bingo.
Throughout her life, Kelen has enjoyed great memories, but above all, she says she has enjoyed leaving her mark on the world.
"I'm very excited to have reached 101," said Kelen.
Married to Ali for 68 years, Kelen and her husband have one daughter, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
