Education foundation is offering grants
The Simi Valley Education Foundation has announced that enhancement grant applications are available at each school site and can be downloaded online at www.svef.org.
Enhancement grants provide an opportunity for educators to expand and improve classrooms, grade level or department academic environment; develop richer curriculum, and create innovative and effective ways to meet student needs and increase motivation to learn.
Applications are due Oct. 12.
To qualify, teachers must be employed by the Simi Valley School District teaching grades kindergarten through 12.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE
Rotary sets benefit golf tournament
The Rotary Club of Westlake Village Sunrise is holding its annual Golf Classic and Auction on Sept. 17 at the North Ranch Country Club.
The event will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and other charities.
Entry fees are $275 per golfer or $1,000 for a foursome. Sponsorship level packages are available. Dinner tickets are available at $65 each.

CAMARILLO
Church will show Disney film for free
Camarillo United Methodist Church will screen the Disney classic "The Sword in the Stone" at a free family movie night Sept. 15.
The public is invited to the movie, which will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in Brooks Hall.
The evening includes free hot dogs, popcorn and fruit drinks.
The Disney film brings the legend of King Arthur to life.

Braille van will make two stops
Mobile Solutions, a specialized van that brings Braille Institute programs and services to people who cannot travel to the Santa Barbara Regional Center, will make two stops this month in Camarillo.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13, the van will be at the Camarillo Senior Center, 1605 E. Burnley St. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25, the van will be at Atria Las Posas, 24 Las Posas Road.
The van is equipped with high-power magnifiers, closed-circuit televisions and other equipment to help maximize remaining vision. The van also has a display area where people can purchase from the Braille Institute's Vistas store such things as adaptive kitchen utensils and talking watches.
Potential clients also can receive free low-vision consultations and learn about the institute's library services. Qualified clients can receive talking books.

OAK PARK
Library group is seeking volunteers
The Friends of the Oak Park Library is looking for new volunteer board members.
The organization is a support group for the Oak Park Library, on the grounds of Oak Park High School. The group funds events during Summer Reading at the library and purchases new books and media, among other items.
With expanded hours beginning Tuesday, the library provides services to students, adults and children.
Volunteers attend board meetings three times a year, discuss grant requests and distributions to the library, and maintain the bookstore in the library.

CALABASAS
City finance official to address chamber
The chief financial officer for Calabasas will speak at a breakfast meeting in Agoura Hills this month.
The Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the breakfast at 8 a.m. Sept. 12 featuring Gary Lysik, who will address how a chamber and business community can have a working relationship with the city.
Under Lysik's leadership, Calabasas has obtained a top bond rating, officials said. He is supervising construction of the city's $42 million civic center. He also is a recipient of the Edward L. Masry award for integrity in community service.

VENTURA
Nearly 3,000 without power in cable failure
Nearly 3,000 Ventura residents were without power at 7:51 a.m. Sunday when an underground cable failed, according to Southern California Edison.
Power was restored within two hours, except for 43 customers who regained power at 3:54 p.m.
An Edison representative reported that the outage was not related to the heat wave.
Nonprofit will host benefit dinner
Kensington Foundation Inc. will host a dinner this month to benefit a pediatric acute rehabilitation facility in Ventura County.
The event will take place at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Crowne Plaza in Ventura. Tickets cost $65. The nonprofit organization provides assistance in children's medical rehabilitation and development throughout the county.
The "Dixieland Riverboat Dinner" will feature comedian Bob Smiley and musicians the New Orleans Blend.
