Malcolm Jones knows all about pressure.
No, not from playing and starring in big games. Been there, done that.
Not even from starting his first game as the varsity tailback, which he did as a sophomore for the Oaks Christian School football team in its 49-14 victory over visiting Lompoc in its season opener Friday night.
How about: Preserving the rich tradition created by his former teammates?
"Basically, all the seniors from last year called me and said they would kill me if we didn't win this game," he said with a grin. "We were all pumped up tonight. We really wanted to get the record. We didn't want to let anybody down."
Not to worry.
The lopsided win over Lompoc, keyed by touchdowns on six of seven possessions in the first half in grabbing a 42-0 lead, extends the program's win streak to 47 games in a row to set a CIF-Southern Section record.
The 47 wins move Oaks Christian into a third-place tie in the state record lists. Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman also posted a 47-game winning streak.
Jones rushed for 148 yards and one touchdown, and quarterback Christopher Potter threw for 103 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for three more scores in just one half of action.
Canyon and Temple City highs each won 46 games in succession.
"It's a big deal for me," said Potter, officially making the transition from wide receiver to quarterback. "Not many athletes have a chance to be a part of something special like this. I thank God that I've been given this chance."
At summer's end, Oaks Christian becomes the last touted sequel to make like a potential blockbuster.
The Lions may have graduated last season's stellar senior class from a team that finished 15-0, won the CIF-State Division III championship and sent 11 players onto Division I college football.
But there apparently is plenty left for an encore.
The Lions looked to be in playoff form, particulary on offense, in scoring on its first four possessions in the first quarter and six of seven in the first half. The only misfire came on a interception.
Otherwise, Potter looked like an able successor to graduated star Jimmy Clausen, now at Notre Dame. Jones looked like the next Marc Tyler.
Jones fielded the opening kickoff and sprinted 64 yards to the Lompoc 21-yard line.
Potter promptly connected with Christopher Coyle on a 17-yard connection, then scampered around left end for the 4-yard touchdown.
The onslaught was on.
The Lions completed scoring drives of 53, 44, 80, 49 and 8 yards to open up a 42-0 lead at halftime.
Potter completed 5 of 9 for 103 yards, and rushed four times for 26 yards in finishing his night's work by intermission.
Wide receiver Christopher Owusu caught two passes for 32 yards and one touchdown and had one interception.

The headlines should read either: Set a CIF record or CIF SS record. Wow, 47 wins. 75% of the their games have been against small schools. They are over 100 wins short of the real CIF and national record set by De La Salle

How many games did De La Salle have against "Big" schools in the first 47 games of their streak?
How many games against "Big" schools did De La Salle have in the first five years of the schools existence?
Oaks Christian is still young and is building a program that will be able to compete with ANYONE in the Country in a very short period of time.
