Sculptures light up CLU

Sean Sobczak's whimsical light sculptures have returned to CLU by popular demand.

"Light Sculptures by Sean Sobczak" is on exhibit through Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture, located inside the Soiland Humanities Center.

The Los Angeles resident combines steel wire, imported fabrics and various types of illumination to create surreal plants, insects and ocean life. His sculptures include fantastic sea horses with laser eyes, creepy spiders and glowing dragonflies. Sobczak uses delicate curves, rich textures and warm colors to infuse his pieces with a gentle, dreamlike quality that encourages viewers to rediscover these wonders of nature with childlike awe.

The artist created his first sculpture after returning inspired from the Burning Man Art Festival in 2001. His six-foot-tall glowing seahorse became the cornerstone of an elaborate 33-foot-long mobile art installation at the next summer's festival. Since then, Sobczak's light sculptures have been featured in festivals, benefits and galleries throughout the west coast.

The Kwan Fong Gallery and the Art Department are sponsoring the free exhibit. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. CLU is located at 60 W. Olsen Road in Thousand Oaks.
