The Oak Park Unified School District is looking for applicants to fill a trustee position that will become open in December.

Veteran trustee Jim Kalember will leave the school board effective Dec. 7 to take a teaching position in Arizona. Kalember's term ends in December 2008.

"Jim is a fine example of a board member who always put the kids first and is a good listener," Oak Park Superintendent Anthony Knight said. "We are looking for someone who really cares about kids and who wants to ensure we do everything possible to provide a quality education for all the children of Oak Park."

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a resident of the Oak Park Unified School District and a registered voter.

Individuals interested in the position must obtain an application from the district office at 5801 Conifer St. or by calling superintendent executive assistant Linda Sheridan at 818-735-3206.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday at the district office. The district has received two applications so far, Sheridan said.

The board will interview applicants at a special public meeting at 4 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Oak Park High School library, 899 N. Kanan Road. It will select a new trustee at a regular board meeting Nov. 13, and the new board member will be sworn in Dec. 11.

The board's responsibilities include establishing the organization and structure of the district, outlining academic expectations and adopting curriculum, establishing budget priorities and adjusting the district's finances, upholding board policies, setting parameters for negotiations with employees, and monitoring student achievement.

Oak Park has 3,720 students in its eight schools.
