Gambala helps lift Boise State

Hueneme High graduate Samantha Gambala scored the first goal in Boise State's 3-2 victory over Nevada last weekend to give the Broncos sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference. Gambala, a senior forward, is a former player for the Camarillo Eagles club.

BOXING

Oxnard PAL boxers earn medals

The Oxnard PAL Mid-City Boxing Club returned from the inaugural Soboba Casino Amateur Championships in San Jacinto, winning two championships and garnering four silver medals.

In Saturday's championship round, Carmen Montes, a female in the 17-34 age division, defeated Karie Del Melo of Coachella for the 132-pound title. Gilberto Duarte, boys' bantam division (8-9), won the 60-pound class by outpointing Robert Vasquez of Los Angeles.

In the senior division finals, Joe Albano, 110; Jhonni Hernandez, 125; Louis Ybarra, 132; and Angel Perez, 138, earned silver medals.

Duarte, Hernandez and Ybarra will be competing in the Southern California Silver Gloves Championships in Long Beach, Thursday through Sunday.

The Oxnard PAL Mid-City Boxing Club is coached by Rocky Garza, the 2004 USA National Boxing Championships Most Outstanding Coach. Garza is also a three-time National PAL head boxing coach of the year. Joe Santistevan, a former All-Navy boxer, coaches with Garza.
