University courses exclusively for adult learners

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University Channel Islands has offered a wide range of courses for mature adults age 50+ since 2004. Enrollment is now open for the winter 2008 session, which begins the week of January 7 and ends on March 3. 2008.Most courses meet on the University campus in Camarillo once a week for 8 weeks, for two hours. Monday courses are held at the Ventura Senior Recreation Center and there is a Wednesday evening course at the Simi Valley Senior Center. Members may enroll in as many courses as they wish without the burden of grades, tests, or preparing for a career. Courses are not for enhancing career or vocational skills. They provide intellectual enrichment. For mature learners, they are a chance to learn about science, culture, history, art, music and all the other topics that they didn't have time for while getting their degrees and career training. And they can learn and discuss these topics in classes of adults with the same interests. Because of the appeal and range of OLLI classes, annual membership has doubled since 2004, and numbers 500 Ventura County adults in the 2007-2008 year. Winter courses include: The Swing Era (Ventura), Symphony and Opera (Ventura), Human Origins, 20 th Century American Classical Music, Language and Law, The 2008 Primaries, Archaeology (Simi Valley), Documentary Films, the Harlem Renaissance, Memoir Writing, and French Impressionism. Courses are free to OLLI members with membership current in the winter session. The unlimited enrollment membership fee is $125 for the 8 week winter session, but the fee is $65 for those who are enrolling in only one of the Ventura or Simi Valley classes. Membership also offers guest speakers throughout the university, attendance at university events, annual overseas tours, and musical performances just for members. For those who are unable to attend 8 week courses, OLLI also offers "A Taste of OLLI" in Thousand Oaks at the CSUCI Extended Education Center at 501 Marin Ave. Mini-classes meet for eight consecutive Saturdays, 10 AM to 12 PM beginning January 12, 2008. Each Saturday brings a different topic. Selections include Film and Society, The Legal Arguments for Diversity, Language Differences in Males and Females, Bluegrass Music and more. People may enroll in as many mini-classes as they wish for $10.00 per course.

Attend a course for the sheer joy of learning! Members enjoy learning with other mature adults without the burden of grades, tests, or preparing for a career. OLLI classes are designed exclusively for mature adults seeking quality learning experiences at low cost. Classes fill quickly, so it is advisable to enroll early, before December 15.
